"The Body Never Lies"

By Melissa Stiers, Sacred Dance Series participant

I go to Springhouse to dance. Every other Wednesday a group of us gather to give expression to what lies within that gets teased out by the music and the movement. In this space, whoever shows up in you or in another, a face of sadness, of joy, peace, pain, strength is accepted. It's as if the whole being of humanity's experience is laid bare on the dance floor and affirmed in us.

The body never lies, said the mother of modern dance, Martha Graham. And when you are feeling and moving through this space to a rhythm, you understand. Pretense evaporates. Gone, as well: what you want. You are with what is, with what you are feeling on the edge of the present moment, on its wing, out of time, authentic and fully embodied. No place for the rational mind of abstraction and thought to get stuck in. Free to let it be and move on.

This is my second semester of Sacred Dance at Springhouse. It is a spontaneous and exhilarating practice, heart-opening and challenging.  It's a place to explore boundaries, exercise discipline and celebrate our common experience of being alive right now, in this form, together.
