Eye-Opening Service

- Written by Lisa Todd, a teen from Vermont currently enrolled in Springhouse's "Empowerment in the Modern Moment" -

This past week for Springhouse we had to choose an act of kindness to do for someone else. I wasn’t on call when we decided, but I chose to do the dishes and clean up the living room and kitchen for my mom. I could tell how much that meant to my parents, especially my mom.

In order to do this, I needed to realize how much my parents do for me and how little I do for them. I felt terrible and thought that I should do something for them since they do so much for me with sometimes not even a thank you in return. When I first started, I realized how difficult it was to keep going when you don’t feel motivated. When I finished, my mom was walking in the door. She dropped everything and just hugged me. I saw her eyes water and the way she said thank you was heartwarming and heartbreaking all at the same time. It was heartwarming because I knew how much that meant to her and it was heartbreaking because I realized how exhausting it is to work all day and then do hours of housework with nothing in return. She is truly a superhero.

Doing this seemingly small act of service for my mom opened my eyes and showed me how much she truly does. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it really is. In the future, I am going to try to do things like this more often to lighten the weight on her shoulders.
