A Breath of Fresh Air

Written by Shawna Williams, Springhouse Parent

My daughter has experienced an assortment of educational philosophies, curricula, and teaching methods throughout her schooling experience. She has attended a Montessori school, a charter school based on the principles of Expeditionary Learning, a public one room country schoolhouse in rural Montana, a Waldorf-inspired charter school, a typical public high school, and now Springhouse Community School. I have watched her adapt and grow and generally love school throughout the years. However, for the last two years, she dreaded going to school, her confidence and motivation dwindled, and she began to lose herself and her creative passions.

As an educator, I realize there is no “one-size-fits-all” method or model of learning that encompasses all children’s learning styles and needs. As a mother, I have gradually learned what suits my daughter the most. I have observed what feeds her being, and I have identified the type of learning environment that builds her self-confidence and helps her flourish. Springhouse has truly given life back to her learning.

Since starting at Springhouse at the beginning of this school year, I have seen my daughter revitalized, as though she had finally taken a breath of fresh air after holding her breath for too long. She sees the meaning and purpose behind what she is learning again. She feels appropriately challenged yet supported emotionally as well as academically. She is given the opportunity to be creative and to grow within this creativity. She can embrace and develop in depth what gives her passion. Springhouse supports soul searching and provides room for students to navigate adolescent development and ultimately learn the skills they need to be successful and hopeful adults. As a parent, what more can one ask for?
