Walk and Touch Peace Every Moment

“Walk and touch peace every moment.
Walk and touch happiness every moment.
Each step brings a fresh breeze.
Each step makes a flower bloom.
Kiss the Earth with your feet.
Bring the Earth your love and happiness.
The Earth will be safe
when we feel safe in ourselves.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

It started with a few good conversations with my dear friend Jenny Brady Finn of Springhouse Community School on the topic of leaving one’s front door and walking in one direction... for hours... or for days at a time.

We dreamed. We planted seeds. We blocked the time. We combed through all the barriers and fears.

Staff (Roxanne, Sarah, Ezekiel, Jenny, Ian, Haley and Liz) from the school started planning, scouting routes, organizing volunteers and prepping students.

On May 3rd, we walked into Roanoke, VA from the front door of their school in Floyd, VA roughly 45 miles away. This amazing community (students, staff, board members, and friends) moved for 4-days by foot mostly along Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway absorbing the joy, freedom, pain, and awe of going by foot.

No in-classroom studies. No paper. No checking boxes and memorizing words.

This is learning at the body and spirit level. I so strongly believe that it feeds and develops one’s capacity to trust the land, to feel capable in one’s body, to face personal and collective struggle, to absorb many injustices of our time, and to explore the unknown.

Lifting waves of gratitude for all who supported us and all that was shared this week. I carry all of these beautiful memories with me in the days ahead.
