Mentoring at Springhouse

Hello, my name is Lotus Billand Yard, and I’m an 8th grader here at Springhouse Community School. Mentoring is a one-on-one meeting to discuss academic issues and personal problems that are happening in the student's life. I meet once a week with my mentor. I also meet with a small group of people once a week, these people are also people who are mentored by my mentor. We meet and do group exercises to build relationships. This community has helped me grow to be more comfortable with my body and my feelings.

My mentor is Haley Leopold. Haley has been my mentor for almost two years, and I don't know what I would do without her. I am surprised how much I cry when we meet. There are a lot of things that I hold inside and don't want to show people, but Haley shows me that it’s okay to have feelings. Haley and I have a foundation of trust that we have built up over the past year. I am so grateful for her, and I hope to continue our mentoring throughout the years here.

I used to be afraid to cry in front of people because I thought they would make fun of me, but Springhouse has taught me that it is okay to cry, that it is okay to be me. Through mentoring, the school has taught me that there are people that love me and care about me. I am so happy to be here and just want to say that I am so grateful for the staff and the students. They push me to do things that make me vulnerable. This is what a true community is.
