Empowerment in the Modern Moment

Written by Jenny Glick, Springhouse Adult Programming Participant

I attended the recent online Empowerment Class with Springhouse Community School and it was such a lovely breath of fresh air during the global pandemic. Facilitated by Jenny Finn, the class had depth, heart, and engaged dozens of adult learners from Canada, to Mexico and throughout the US! What a wonderful way to connect with others during a time of such chaos and fear in the rest of the world.

Through prose, poetry, song and contemplation, we were guided to reflect upon our own experiences and share with both the larger group and our small groups. The small groups were facilitated by Springhouse staff and I found this space to be so peaceful, spacious and fertile for both discussion and also simply to germinate on what had been presented. My small group brought together adults from different backgrounds, ages and lifestyles which made the discussions rich and connecting.

What I most appreciated from the class was simply a space to witness and be deeply present during a time of such tumult and unknown. To sit with other adults who were also hungry for space and reflection together was incredibly valuable. The Empowerment Class was a welcome opportunity to connect with HUMANITY and SELF in a world that feels unwilling to do either with the kind of space and expansion that Jenny and her team offered. It was a real gift to participate in a class that had structure (starting and ending on time, agreements and purpose) and space to unfold (silence, quiet, and facilitators able to hold space for students to emerge in their own time).

Thank you to Dr. Finn and her heart-centered staff for creating such an offering for the community!
