A Step of Faith

by Brad Dulaney, Participant in Springhouse's Sacred Dance Series

Stepping onto the dance floor was nothing short of a risk-taking leap of faith for me. Having lived the first half of my life mostly in my head, Springhouse was challenging me to step into my body with heart and soul. As a faith leader, I had taken risks in many different contexts—from the urban poverty of El Salvador, to the pulpits and board rooms of middle-class churches. But I had never attempted anything so terrifying as showing up to Sacred Dance.

The week before my first dance session, I confessed to Jenny Finn: “I want to receive mentoring, but can’t we forgo the whole dance thing? It scares the hell out of me!” After patiently exploring what was beneath my fears, she posed a question that cracked me open: “Do you trust that Christ will be present on the dance floor?” After a moment of dumbfounded silence, I said, “Of course he’s on the dance floor. It would be foolishness to say he isn’t there.” “So,” Jenny probed, “do you trust Christ enough for you to show up on the dance floor, too?”

I did. And I have many times in the nine months since that conversation. And so has Christ. As I have moved on the dance floor, received mentoring, and connected with the Springhouse community, I have grown more in touch with my fuller self. My previously cerebral engagement with the world has deepened and expanded into a more robust, whole-hearted, whole-being presence in the world. I live from a more grounded place, deepening my capacity to love others, to love God, and to love my self. I see reality more clearly, and engage it with greater courage, tenderness and strength. By a grace beyond myself, I feel more alive and whole than any other time of my life.

As I leave a sabbatical season, I walk into challenges as the communities I serve as a leader endure turmoil and transformation. I can step more assuredly, and with greater freedom and compassion, knowing that I am very much at home in my body, and at home in God. Trust. It’s one of Springhouse’s core values, and a truth which this school has helped deepen in my heart, soul, mind and body. For this gift, I am truly grateful.
