Follow the Call

The Wanderer (in the shadow) discovers something of the image or gift that is his to bring t0 the world, or of the larger story that he’s meant to live, or of his ultimate place of belonging in the world. He understands this place eco-centrically; it’s his place in the more-than-human world, as opposed to a culturally defined vocation or social role. Wisdom is having things right in your life

and knowing why.

If you do not have things right in your life

you will be overwhelmed:

but do not know why,

Every person has unique gifts to offer the world, and in the shadow shines the light of one’s gifts. When we do the wandering work of getting to know those gifts, we can then learn how to bring them to the world.

 

At Springhouse, we understand that the responsibility of education is to draw those gifts forth and provide opportunities to get to know, and practice offering, those gifts. The Follow the Call Doorway gives those who can hear their call, and are possibly following it, the opportunity to strengthen the ground that they stand on. It is from this place of strength that we can continue to live from our truth consistently, boldy, and effectively.

 

We are not the first to reimagine education by orienting the educational path around reclaiming one’s calling. The ancient philosopher Plato “believed that it was the role of education to uncover each person’s talent, train its mastery, and apply it toward the flourishing of society.” Parker Palmer, a contemporary scholar, writes in his book Let Your Life Speak: “Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am.” Michael Meade defines these inner gifts as genius and reminds us that only adults who have claimed their own genius, can work with others to reclaim theirs. Educational philosopher John Dewey writes that calling is “a continuous activity having a purpose,” and the late Irish theologian John O’Donohue tells us that the Greek root for the word beauty is related to calling (kalon). Through practice, and with support, we come to find beauty as our deepest nature. Following the call is learning how to continuously live from that beauty - not in a way that fosters perfection, but in a way that cultivates wholeness.
